As the year draws to a close, it gets Christmassy in Thuringia. Christmas-lit squares and streets, the smell of bratwurst and mulled wine everywhere, stalls with traditional crafts and, of course, the traditional Christmas tree baubles from Lauscha - that's what characterises the Thuringian Christmas markets.

Fairytale market in Gera
Life-size, hand-crafted and lovingly designed fairytale figures are the centrepiece of the Gera Fairytale Market. Together with light installations, decorations and the Christmas tree on the market square with 7,800 lights, they beautify the city centre. The festively decorated stalls offer a wide range of Christmas goods, arts and crafts, Thuringian specialities, international delicacies and mulled wine specialities. The fairytale market starts at the city museum and winds its way through the pedestrianised zone to the market square.

Kugelmark Lauscha
The birthplace of the Christmas tree bauble is the small village of Lauscha in the middle of the Thuringian Forest. Even today, everything in Lauscha revolves around glass Christmas tree decorations. On the first and second weekend of Advent, regional artisans and numerous glass traders offer Christmas tree decorations and other works of art made of glass at the bauble market.
