Suhl

Art and culture

Pure cultural enjoyment! From Suhl, you can take a half-hour train journey to Meiningen. In addition to the theatre (museum) or Elisabethenburg Castle, there is plenty to discover in the town. The Natural History Museum at Bertholdsburg Castle in the southern Thuringian town of Schleusingen is also well worth a visit and can be reached quickly in just under 35 minutes by car. Eisfeld Castle is located in Eisfeld, a small town on the Thuringian border with Bavaria and around an hour's journey from Suhl by bus (lines 200 & 205). The Eisfeld Museum houses an exhibition on the town's history and regional folklore, the Otto Ludwig Poetry Memorial and the Museum of the Inner German Border Eisfeld - Rottenbach.

Family and leisure

If you're out and about in Suhl, you can't miss the vehicle museum. On more than 1,400 m² you will find lovingly restored exhibits of Suhl and Thuringian vehicle construction. You can travel from Suhl by train and bus to the Steam Locomotive Adventure World Meiningen. After a journey of around three quarters of an hour, a fascinating world of steam locomotives awaits you. You can round off your stay in Meiningen with a stroll through the old town (approx. 10 min bus ride). Or you can visit the largest accessible fissure and crevice cave in Europe - the Goetz Cave (approx. 30 min bus ride on line 10 from the Dampflok Erlebniswelt/ approx. 10 - 15 min bus ride from the city center).

Tip
Suhl Observatory and Planetarium

The observatory with its domed planetarium is located on a hill above the city center of Suhl. Planetarium shows take place there regularly.

Nature and activity

The Zoo in Suhl offers educational experiences in nature as well as exciting encounters. The zoo can be reached from Suhl train station in 13 minutes by various bus lines. It is then not far from the bus stop of the same name. Once you arrive, around 500 animals await you, which are kept close to nature in spacious enclosures.

The day continues in a sporty and active way. Next stop: the viewpoint on the Schneekopf. Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view.
